Linus Ip is emerging as one of the most sought-after young conductors of his generation, recognized for his innovative programming, cultural collaborations, and commitment to engaging younger audiences in the concert hall. He currently serves as Music Director and Conductor of the Philadelphia Sinfonia.
This past summer, he was Cover Conductor and Assistant Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute at the John F. Kennedy Center, where he led rehearsals, educational activities, and the conducting apprentice program where he worked alongside top professionals, collaborating closely with musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra and Washington National Opera, as well as emerging young artists.
In the past season, Linus also served as Assistant Conductor of the Orion Youth Symphony of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra as well as Conductor and curator of the Old Bay Ensemble for New Music. At the core of his artistic vision is the advocacy of underrepresented narratives, bringing a powerful and inclusive voice to the communities he serves.
Linus was a semifinalist in the 2024 Kussewitzky International Conducting Competition in Italy and was previously selected as a Conducting Fellow with Marin Alsop at the National Orchestral Institute. His recent engagements include conducting the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra (US), and the National Philharmonic, as well as assisting Marin Alsop with the Washington Choral Arts Society at the Kennedy Center. In summer 2024, he appeared as guest conductor with the Symphoniker Hamburg in Germany and was a Conducting Scholar at the Eastern Music Festival.
A passionate advocate for living composers, Linus has dedicated himself to premiering new works. At the Old Bay New Music Ensemble, he has made contemporary music more accessible by inviting audiences into the creative worlds of living composers. In the 2024–25 season, he led the ensemble in multiple sinfonietta premieres and conducted five new operas in collaboration with Peabody Opera. He also maintains an ongoing collaboration with the MfNM Ensemble for New Media and, since 2021, has served as Associate Conductor & Associate Curator of NYsoundCircuit in New York.
Linus earned his Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, studying under Marin Alsop and Joseph Young. He had additionally assisted Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Opera, and the Peabody Youth Orchestra at the Peabody Preparatory Institute. He also studied with Ulrich Windfuhr at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Previously, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from the Mannes School of Music, where he studied with Huang Ruo. His private conducting mentors include Henry Shek, Mark Shapiro, and Michael Charry. He has further enriched his training through masterclasses with distinguished conductors such as Mei-Ann Chen, Gerard Schwarz, José-Luis Novo, Toby Purser, Martin Sieghart, and James Ross.
